In this 4-lesson introductory course, you’ll discover the structure and culture of the guqin, learn to read its unique notation system, and practice essential right-hand techniques. Step by step, you’ll apply these foundations as you learn to play “Xianweng Cao,” a beginner-friendly guqin piece.

My name is Yanxi, and I have been learning the guqin for six years. Seven years ago, during a difficult time in my life, the gentle sound of the guqin gradually helped me find my balance again and reconnect with myself. This experience changed the way I understood music and the role it can play in our lives. Through my interactions with international students, I’ve come to realize that many people around the world are also seeking a calmer, more inward way of living. The guqin, with its quiet beauty and deep roots in traditional Chinese culture, offers a meaningful way to slow down, listen, and reflect. This is why I created Yanxi Music and began teaching guqin online. I hope to share the beauty of the guqin with people around the world, making this ancient instrument accessible to anyone who feels drawn to its sound and spirit. My teaching is patient and step by step, with practical feedback to help you improve your technique, along with opportunities to explore the music and culture behind the instrument.
